1. You wake up with aches and pains
Do you often wake up with pain in your back, neck or shoulders that you do not have (or no longer have) during the day? Then your bed or mattress could be to blame. A mattress that does not give the right support leaves your spine out of alignment. This leads to:
- Stiff muscles and joints in the morning
- Poor sleep from constant tossing and turning
- Long-term (chronic) back or neck problems if it goes on too long
Feel fine in the evening but ache in places when you get up? Then it is definitely time to look at a new bed or mattress.
2. Your mattress is sagging or worn out
Sagging areas or uneven patches in your mattress are a clear sign of wear. If your mattress is no longer level, your body sinks into those 'dips'. That undermines the support for your back and can cause real discomfort.
- Check for yourself: lay your mattress on the floor and look for visible dents or lumps. Press down in different places, too, to feel whether it is equally springy everywhere.
A high-quality mattress keeps its shape for many more years, but nothing lasts for ever. If your mattress turns out to be worn out, replacing it is the only way to get a healthy night's sleep.
3. Your bed creaks, squeaks or wobbles
A bed frame that squeaks or creaks can be very disruptive when you are trying to sleep. It is also a sign that parts are loose, damaged or no longer fit together properly. That applies to every kind of bed frame:
- Metal beds: check that the screws and welds are still sound.
- Wooden beds: look out for cracks, woodworm or worn joints.
- Box springs: check whether the frame or the springs have come loose.
When your bed is no longer stable, your mattress cannot do its job properly either. A poor frame combined with a worn mattress puts extra strain on your body and makes for a restless night.
4. Your sleep quality is getting worse
Are you sleeping more restlessly, waking up often in the night or not feeling rested when you get up? Those are strong signs that your bed and/or mattress no longer meets your needs. Signs of poor sleep quality include:
- Difficulty falling asleep
- Lots of tossing and turning in bed
- Drowsiness or trouble concentrating during the day
A good bed supports your body properly, so you can stay in deep sleep for longer. If that is not (or no longer) happening, it is worth finding out whether a new bed is the answer.
5. Your bed or mattress is more than 7 to 10 years old
However carefully you treat your bed, every mattress and every base has a limited lifespan. In general, replacing them after 7 to 10 years is quite normal, especially if your bed gets heavy use (sleeping every night, power naps, children jumping on it and so on).
- House dust mites and bacteria build up over time, even if you wash your bedding regularly.
- The springs or foam wear out, so the support gradually decreases.
Not sure how old your current bed or mattress is? Then there is a good chance it is already past its best.
Conclusion
A sagging mattress, a squeaky bed frame or recurring back pain: these are clear signs that your bed needs replacing. If you recognise them, it is time to invest in a new bed or mattress. After all, a good night's sleep is priceless; you feel fitter, more energetic and healthier when your body can truly rest.
